Summers Past ...

Every time a hint of Summer breaks through the clouds here in the UK, it seems the weather changes and back to square one we go ... the big question is, will Summer ever arrive to stay?!

'Rosa' 2009

I have been looking through my portfolio of past Summer designs in search of a little 'sun-spiration' this week and thought I'd share a few with you ... I hope they brighten your day!

'Peony' 2008

'Kefalonia' 2010

'Sunshine' 2008

'Calypso' 2009

'Lavendar-Lou' 2011

'Mabel' 2009

'Raspberry Ripple' 2008

And last but by no means least, a ray of sunshine from one of my all time favourite teddy bears, the fabulous 'Sunny Jim' - created for 'Dare to Care' in aid of the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) way back in 2006.

Would you believe it, as I type the heaven's have just opened, the skies have darkened and yes, there's a chill in the air!  So much for 'Flamin' June', hmph!

ABOUT PAWS IN PINK

'Paws in Pink' is a group of teddy bear artists who have come together to created very special artist teddybears, donated to raise money for the 'Breast Cancer Care' Charity.

Paws in Pink for Breast Cancer Care was set up in memory of Melanie Jayne's mum Susan Culshaw, who died from breast cancer at the age of 51 and also to create a very special way to celebrate what would have been her 60th birthday in June 2013.  Paws in Pink is dedicated to all people who have suffered and survived breast cancer.

The first charity event will take place in June 2013 and will run until the end of July 2013.  The five teddybear artists who have created and donated special bears for our first charity event are Melanie Jayne - Bear Treasures, Lynette Littlejohn - LJ Bears, Susan Smith - Kesseys Bears, Amanda Ferguson - Honey Pot Bears and Sandra Piper - Skye Rose Bears.

All donations taken during the June and July 2013 fundraising event are taken through Paws in Pink for Breast Cancer Care Just Giving page and all donations go directly to the charity.

The gift of knowledge

Dad's book was never written.  He catalogued many photographs from his seventy four years on this planet, with the intention of telling his life's story one day soon, but when it came to sitting still and getting the job done, Dad's final Autumn blazed so beautifully, he simply couldn't resist the call of his garden.  In hindsight, I think I knew he had a sense of something significant on the horizon; he told me he needed to finish his book, but wasn't sure he would be around the following year to write it, but Autumn was so glorious in 2010, I laughed off his comment and told him his book would wait until the winter months.  I couldn't imagine a day when he wouldn't be around to enjoy his garden ...

As the years slipped by, it became more and more important to Dad that when the day finally came and he was no longer with us, there would be a record of his life, something to show who he had been, what he had seen and what had been most important to him.

He needed us not to forget him ... as if we ever could.

Dad left us without warning on 18th September 2010 and as I wrote the eulogy for his funeral it became clear to me that although his book was never written, everything Dad truly needed us to know, he had already shown, or told us.

To write his book would have meant temporarily putting real life on hold whilst re-living the past and Dad really wasn't a man to do that.  He was a 'do-er', a larger than life character eager to experience life and carve his niche in the world, not the kind of man to sit down and write a book!

So Dad, don't worry, you never could have been forgotten.  You are with us always and of course we miss you every day ... but not only that ... as your daughters, we celebrate who you were with pride, love and also with the knowledge you shared.

We may not have the written dates and details of your early travels and experiences, but that's not important - what is important is that you were our Dad and you taught us about life in a way no-one else could have done.

Happy Father's Day xxx

In 'other news' ..

I'm sure you must think I've been hopelessly distracted by my puppy Polly since she arrived six weeks ago, as I have had no new bears to show you lately, but I promise, there are some super new creations being brought to life behind scenes.  I'm afraid I can't share these oh-so-secretive bears with you yet because one of the rules of the 'Teddy Bear and Friends Picnic' show is that all participating bears and friends must stay under wraps until the big day ... June 28th!

So in 'other news', Polly has been having a lovely time out walking and loves to bumble around the 'yellow field' close to our house -  sad to say, this beautiful area is threatened with a housing development in the near future, which is such a shame ...

On Sunday we had a super day at my sister's home in Wormshill ... the dogs played happily in the garden, while the boys started work building a spiral staircase into the ash tree at the bottom of the garden and we girls did what girls do best, drank coffee, ate cake and nattered!

Cuddle time with Auntie Fo

Polly had a wonderful time in the garden with her handsome new pal Bugsy and his bouncy buddy Marley (my niece's labrador) and between chases squeezed in plenty of cuddle time with all her people!

Saying hello to Leah and Ella

Building a spiral stairway into the ash tree!

'Bugsy'

So as you see, we've had another fun weekend in the fresh air ... bit chillier this weekend though!  (I wonder when Summer will arrive?) Back to working on my secret bears today and as Polly is pretty tired after her weekend chasing with the big boys, I think I'll be able to work for a few hours this afternoon, while her ladyship catches up on her beauty sleep!

A very splendid Sunday!

The sun shone, the birds sang and yesterday morning I was up with the larks to help my niece prepare for her beautiful baby girl's Christening Day.  All hands were on deck at the celebration venue laying out a fine spread for baby Ella's party, before we walked back through Aylesford village in our finery, to St Peter and St Paul's Church, where we shared a lovely family service and welcomed Baby Ella officially into the wider Church family and of course, to our own.

My Great niece Ella on her Christening Day
with proud Mummy and Daddy, Leah & Gary.

Relatives drove from far and wide to share Ella's very special day and to show her just how important she is to us all.  We watched  proudly as her parents and Godparents pledged to take care of her, then family and friends joined together to celebrate Ella's new life in traditional style, with music, balloons, chat, gifts, cards, a magnificent tiered cake, dainty cupcakes (made by my son's talented girlfriend) and a table heavily laden with tasty tidbits.

  Mummy Leah and Ella

Little Ella chatted with her guests for as long as she could manage, before excitement overwhelmed her and she dozed off in mummy's arms.

Daddy Gary and Ella

Sharing the baptism of a new life is a rare privilege and as Ella's Great Auntie Paula, I couldn't have been more delighted to share in her very splendid day!

Puppy Love!

Forgive me for yet another puppy post!

Polly was invited to play with Bugsy, my sister's beautiful German Shepherd, on Sunday.  It was their first meeting and I swear Polly has been sulking since she had to say goodbye and come home ... this is definitely a case of puppy love!

Bugsy was such a gentle boy with our cheeky little Miss and even forgave her grabbing his tail and holding on tight.  They bounced around the garden together all afternoon while we humans enjoyed the sunshine, chat, cake and coffee ... a super way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Creative osmosis?

As you know, I have been a little behind with my bear making schedule of late (thanks to Polly!) but that doesn't mean I haven't been paying the bear world attention.  I'm always busy behind the scenes running the Guild of Master Bearcrafters and am happy to say, it goes from strength to strength, now boasting a membership of over seven hundred international bearcrafters ... amazing!

Naturally, when creative people are drawn together by a common passion, debate can be lively  and our private members' forum is well attended on the Guild.  Lately we have been chatting about the age old topic of inspiration vs. copying, to try and pinpoint where one ends and the other begins ... an important issue for anyone who works hard to create a unique creative identity.

In all my years of bear crafting, I have never found a definitive answer to this question, but I do think it is an important question to think about.  My own view is that the best kind of creativity seeks to employ inspiration in a unique and original way.  To my mind, copycats are fundamentally lazy ... I mean, if you can make a half decent copy of someone else's work, you could probably use a little more imagination and effort to make something original, then enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you accomplished something individual to you.  The bottom line is, a direct copy of someone else's work made without their permission, will not flatter them - it is downright exploitative.

However, I do wonder if perhaps it would be fairer if, rather than immediately being indignant when a bear similar in style  to our own arrives on the scene (I'm not talking overt copies here), we should perhaps be a little kinder towards the maker?  I remember years ago my sister and I set ourselves a challenge to make a bear from two shades of the same fabric.  We chose the fabric together and decided an approximate size, but that was as far as our collaboration went.  We each took our fabric home and created a bear without further discussion.

This was the result ...

I made the bear on the left, my sister made the bear on the right.  As you can see, they 'bear' a strong family resemblance (as do we, lol!)  but we didn't design or make these bears together.  I think it's fair to say this pair of bears turned out remarkably similar anyway, don't you?

Generally speaking, most bear crafters start their design career from the same traditional style of teddy bear, ie they all work with the basic body, head, limbs and five way jointing design.  From that original bear, alternative styles, techniques and creative expressions evolve over time.  Perhaps, just like a creative osmosis, we absorb information simply by looking at other bear crafters' work and because by nature we are creative, elements of that information sometimes process into our own work.  In almost 20 years of bear making, I have noticed it is very rare that anyone comes up with a completely new design which has never been done in one form or another before.

So, for what it's worth, my view is (and it is just my personal view, there will be many other alternatives) the most important thing for both new and established bear crafters, is to try to retain an awareness of why we are taking the creative path we have chosen ... is it to be unique in our work, or is it simply to make bears for sale at any cost?

To achieve a signature style takes time and is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of design.  Drawing inspiration from the world around us is inevitable, but applying that inspiration into original design should be part of a natural creative process, not a deliberate ploy to profit from someone else's hard work.

Walkies!

I am pleased to say my little bucking bronco behaved like a perfect lady on the lead for her very first walkies at the weekend!  She had a lovely time out and about meeting her public at the park for the first time on Saturday ...

Come on Fay, let's run!!!!

Making friends

Just chillin' by the river

Perfect ladies!

A cuddle with Fay

Polly was such a good girl while we were out ... gentle with the many children who came to say hello, patient while other dogs sniffed and circled her (sitting daintily when they became a little too exhuberant for her liking!) and very well behaved on her lead.  She coped so well with her first taste of the big wide world and it goes without saying, we are very proud of her!

Better late than never!

Puppy playtime, not to mention training time, cleaning up time and feeding time, has made a dent in my bear-making schedule of late, but thankfully Tracy at the One More Bear shop in Stoke-on-Trent is one of the loveliest bear shop owners to work with and has been very patient waiting for her new batch of Tiddler bears ... thank you so much Tracy!

8" Pippin

8.5" Liberty

8" Ruben

8" Jonagold

8" Cameo

I am delighted to say, these five Tiddlers will be wending their way to the shop today and should arrive in store tomorrow ... better late than never eh?

Polly Puppy sends her apologies too!

More than words ..

After last week's unpleasantness, these beautiful flowers arrived today with a lovely message.  The senders are very special people who have themselves worked tirelessly to support bear artistry and bear artists for many years. Thank you so much, your thoughtful gesture means a great deal to me xxx

Smell the roses?

This little lady has us smitten and I wonder now, how we ever managed without her ... she is such a bundle of fun, a real smile maker!

With Duckie

As I sit on my swivel chair, she looks at me quizzically as if to say 'come on Mum, the sun's out, let's play in the garden' ... and to be fair, she makes a good point!

It goes without saying my bear making schedule has taken a bit of a battering since she arrived last Thursday, but once in a while, it doesn't hurt to put life back into perspective ... all work and no play is no good for anyone, especially bear makers!

So please accept my apology if I seem a little distracted from my sewing, we'll  soon find our routine and get back on track, but in the meantime, my beautiful puppy needs sunshine and some fun ... and so does her new mum!

Many years ago a well known American bear artist told me to 'make time to smell the roses' and she was absolutely right ... but today, rather than smelling the roses, I'm about to rush outside to stop my new friend from eating them!

Teddy Bear and Friends Picnic

Usually by now I should be thinking about bears I want to make for the Stratford show in June, but this year I've decided to give that show a miss as Polly Puppy will be too little to leave. I still need a focus to punctuate my creative year though, so have instead applied and been accepted to take part in the 'Teddy Bears & Friends Picnic' online show, which will be the perfect early Summer inspiration for me ...

This show is especially for teddy bears and their friends, so watch out for some cheerful new ellies and maybe even a Summery rabbit or two from my workroom!

Puppy Perspective

It's been a somewhat testing week but none of that matters a jot today ...

Yesterday we collected our beautiful new puppy girl and happily, she has settled in to our home perfectly ... already we have had so much fun with her!

She is gentle, playful, eager to please, curious and clever!

We are so thrilled this gorgeous girl has come to live with us and I am completely delighted to have such a special friend to share my days with!

Welcome home Polly!

The heart of the matter ..

To become a respected teddy bear artist takes years of dedication, to become a respected teddy bear advocate takes even longer ...

I first fell in love with teddy bears as a little girl and my passion for these silent friends has remained true for half a century.  As a teddy bear maker, I'm not the kind of person to make demands of the wider 'bear industry', in fact a quiet corner in which to stuff and sew, welcoming faces at shows and of course, kind words, are all I ever ask of my creative life.

Years of trial and error have taught me that knowledge shared not only cements progress in a broader sense, it also helps creative people to grow.  Bear makers are usually isolated in their work and welcome opportunities to share creativity and encourage one another ... it helps drive us.  Throughout my twenty years of bear crafting, I believe I have learned a few things worth sharing, so enjoy helping other bear makers find their way too.

Today I was saddened to see my reputation slandered for no other reason than that of self gain.

Thank heavens, after many privileged years working with warm, honest teddy bear folk, I am confident that such wilfully destructive people are an extremely rare breed in our teddy bear kingdom.

Warm Welcomes

Monday, Monday, where did the weekend go?  Well, aside from the usual household chores, it was another crazy busy weekend and this time, full of babies!  On Saturday I drove out through open countryside in the warm Spring sunshine, to visit my sister Fiona and her family in Wormshill.  Little Ella, (my Great Niece and Fo's Granddaughter) kept us utterly enchanted as we drank coffee, ate cake and chatted all things girly ... definitely one of my favourite ways to pass a Saturday afternoon while Stuart is at footy with his Dad!

'Cute, Pretty & Special' sums this cheeky little bundle up perfectly
... my beautiful Great Niece makes the sun shine even brighter!

Christening Day for Stuart's Granddaughter

On Sunday we were invited to attend Stuart's Granddaughter's Christening at St. Paul's Church in Maidstone.  It was a lovely, friendly service and little Cara looked gorgeous in her Christening gown, behaving impeccably for her very special welcome into the world, before promptly falling fast asleep in Grandad's arms!

It is such a privilege for us to be able to share special times with the newest generation of our family members and something we both cherish.
